Steve Pouchie has been teaching in the New York City Board of Education for over 10 years, and in that time has developed a unique and innovative curriculum in music education.

By combining traditional and modern approaches to music education, 'Mr. Pouchie' as he is called by his students, has incorporated both traditional and contemporary approaches to Music Education at Walton High School in the Bronx.
Walton High School is one of the first high schools in the city that offers on hands courses in Audio Engineering, Digital Sequencing, and Digital Recording to students who successfully complete the required music courses.
Mr. Pouchie's program has already produced many graduates of the school that have successfully become recording artists, recording engineers, and audio and video technicians in the professional world.
Besides studying the history and fundamentals of musicianship, Steve Pouchie is also an experienced teacher of American Jazz History, which is offered as a separate elective course to the students at Walton.
The Percussion Workshop is where students learn  how play the various instruments that are contained in a variety of Caribbean rhythms.
Salsa, Merengue, Calypso, Cha-Cha, and Reggae are all taught and played by Walton Music Students when engaged in the Percussion classes.
Advanced students often get to perform in the community concerts and assemblies that are produced and held in the school.  In 2002 The Walton Digital Percussion Ensemble took first place in the Bronx Talent Showcase sponsored by the 48th Precinct.  The event was televised by Bronxnet.
By far one of the most successful programs in the Walton Music department was the formation in 2002 of the Walton Digital Piano Lab.
In the Piano Lab students are taught the basics of Piano playing.  With more than 30 digital keyboards, sequencers, and workstations, students are allowed to play and create music.
The Walton technique allows students to start with Beethoven, and learn how to play other songs as they progress from level one to other advanced levels.
The Walton Digital Lab is open to students who are able to take Piano lessons as an credited elective towards graduation.
